Get connected There are four DLR stations in the vicinity: South Quay, Crossharbour, Mudchute and Island Gardens, at the southern tip, from where its a 12-minute walk to Greenwich via the foot tunnel (or a couple of minutes on the DLR). From Island Gardens north to Canary Wharf, its 7 minutes on the DLR or a half-hour walk. Canary Wharf is on the Jubilee line (6 minutes to London Bridge) and has DLR services to Bank (11 minutes).

The Isle of Dogs has never sounded particularly beguiling. Less than 15 minutes by DLR from the City, its a hidden, tranquil riverside retreat that feels worlds apart from the capital giving you time to come home relax and be away from all the city noise particularly along the Thames Path, which is lined with converted wharf buildings, parks and majestic views back to the City and of Greenwich at the southern tip. On a sunny day, the promenade feels like the Thames Riviera, as walkers and joggers head past smart low-rise flats. Especially if you take out a dinghy or windsurfer at the Docklands Sailing and Watersports Centre, or a boat at the Poplar, Blackwall & District Rowing Club. Another natural haven can be found at Mud chute city farm, where the sheep and picket fences look slightly surreal with Canary Wharf skyscrapers as a backdrop. So its a neighbourhood that looks to the future, but is also dotted with evocative reminders of Londons gritty past, from anchors and slipways to plaques marking Luftwaffe bombings. Craft Central at the Forge, a series of artists studios and exhibition spaces, is housed in a Victorian ironworks.
